Psychological Health & Safety

Understanding ISO 45003 and psychosocial risk

Regulators increasingly expect psychosocial hazards to be managed with the same discipline as physical ones. Here is what that means in practice.

What ISO 45003 Actually Requires

ISO 45003:2021 is the first international standard dedicated to psychological health and safety at work. It extends the familiar ISO 45001 structure — context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement — to psychosocial risks like excessive workload, low job control, poor leadership, and harassment. It is a guidance standard rather than a certifiable one, which makes a structured self-assessment the most practical starting point for most organizations.

The Psychosocial Hazard Families, Explained

The standard groups psychosocial hazards into three families: aspects of work organization (roles, workload, hours, autonomy), social factors at work (leadership, fairness, support, conflict, work–life balance), and the work environment itself (equipment and physical conditions that amplify stress). A gap analysis works because it forces you to look at each family systematically — most organizations discover they manage physical hazards rigorously while psychosocial hazards are handled informally or not at all.

Gap Analysis vs. Certification Audit

A certification audit is a pass/fail examination by an external body. A gap analysis is the opposite: an honest internal baseline that shows where you stand against each clause and what to fix first. For ISO 45003 — which has no certification scheme — the gap analysis is the deliverable. Done well, it gives leadership a defensible priority list, gives EHS teams a 90-day plan, and creates the baseline score you re-measure against as controls take effect.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is ISO 45003?

ISO 45003:2021 is the international guideline for managing psychological health and safety at work. It helps organizations identify and control psychosocial risks — workload, job control, leadership, harassment, work–life balance — inside their existing OH&S management system. It is a guidance standard, not a certifiable one.

What is a psychosocial risk gap analysis?

A gap analysis compares your current practices against each clause of the standard and scores your maturity. The output is a prioritized list of gaps and the actions needed to close them — the practical first step before investing in controls, training, or audits.

Is this tool a certification audit?

No. This is a structured self-assessment that produces guidance, not a certificate. ISO 45003 itself is not certifiable. The report is designed to baseline your readiness and direct your next 90 days of work — not to satisfy an external auditor.

How does the AI-generated report work?

Your 31 ratings are scored deterministically against the ISO 45003 clause structure. The AI then writes the narrative — an executive summary, clause-by-clause interpretation, your top 3 priority gaps, and a 30/60/90-day roadmap — tailored to your industry, workforce size, work model, and region. It can only recommend actions from a curated library and never invents clause references.

Is the tool really free?

Yes. You get 3 free reports per work email, with no credit card required. If you want to act on the findings continuously — rather than re-running a snapshot — that is what MOOSH, our psychosocial risk management platform, is built for.

How does this connect to MOOSH?

The gap analysis is a one-time baseline. MOOSH is SAFVR's platform for acting on it: continuous psychosocial risk assessment, control reviews, worker consultation, and a linked evidence trail — privacy-first and human-reviewed. Your report's priority gaps map directly onto MOOSH workflows.

Why do you require a work email?

The assessment is built for EHS leaders, plant managers, and HR professionals. Work-email-only access keeps the tool relevant to real organizations and prevents abuse from disposable or personal inboxes.

Who should complete the assessment?

Ideally the person who owns OH&S or wellbeing — an EHS manager, safety lead, or HR partner. For a richer picture, have leaders from operations and HR complete it separately and compare scores; perception gaps between roles are findings in themselves.
